Goal:

My goal was to change the Hollywood Personality Katy Perry from a photograph into a cartoon character.

Why I chose the image:

I chose this image because it already conveyed the message of her being transformed into a cartoon character. The sickly sweet colors of her clothing and the oversized ice cream cone bring up images of Candyland and fantasy worlds.

The message I was trying to Convey:

It seems as Katy Perry has risen in Hollywood, she has lost more and of her original self and become a cartoon character. After starting out trying to become a gospel singer and not having her notoriety rise, she reinvented herself, changed her name and became a star singing pop music. The only thing left in the image that is real is the fake ice cream cone.

My Goal:

My goal was to turn the stop sign background from red to green.

Why I chose this image:

I choose it because drivers associate stopping with the color red and going with the color green. Thus, by changing its color it changes its meaning.

The message I was trying to convey:

I wanted to convey that we associate meaning not only with word but with other factors associated with those words. When the color of the stop sign is changed from red (stop) to green (go) it creates confusion.

My goal: My goal was to replace members of the crowd with the heads of sheep.

Why I chose this image: I chose this image because it represents politics at its best with citizens behind their politician of choice.

The message I was trying to convey: Often citizens jump on the political bandwagon and blindly follow what a political party or individual stands for without the benefit of personal research just because everyone else is "doing it." I wanted to convey that these individuals, "Sheeples," are like sheep because they like to be in a herd, must have a shepherd to lead and guide them otherwise they will wander off and become lost. Sheep also display a variety of needy characteristics: gullibility, unintelligent, vulnerable to fear and frustration, stampede easily and vulnerable to mob psychology, stubborn, perverse, pushy, and are totally dependent upon the shepherd to meet their every need.

My Goal: My goal with this was to put the two main members of my favorite band (The Mars Volta) in a place of sanctity. Here they're pictured in front of a stained-glass window at Notre Dame.

Why I chose this image: I chose this image because The Mars Volta (Omar Rodrigues-Lopez and Cedric Bixler-Zavala, from left to right) are being themselves. The window looks a lot like their performances, but instead of flashing lights, there is a stained glass window.

The message I was trying to convey: I know many people who find music and bands to be something like religious or spiritual experiences. I'm one of them. While The Mars Volta and many other bands seem like childish or trivial things to connect one's spirituality to from one perspective, music itself can also be deep enough to transcend trivialities. Thus, my favorite band in a place of sanctity.

  1. I think the stop sign being green did what it was intended to do. I thought that was a very clever interpretation of the assignment, also.

I didn't understand the Katie Perry reproduction until I read the answers beneath it. Therefore, I don't think it was successful in doing what the artist intended.

  2. I like your reproduction of Katy Perry. I did not understand the meaning behind the image until I read your description. I agree with your thought process and enjoy your creation.

  3. The stop sign image was a great idea. It was simple and to the point. It was funny upon first viewing and it definitely conveyed its idea well. Nice work.

  4. The first impression that I received from Danialle's reproduced image was a pretty girl who was so made up into the perfect illusion that the only thing that remained real was the plastic ice cream cone which ironically isn't real at all. After reading her initial description, I am even more convinced by my first impression with the added feeling of dismay that a young, talented woman that was a gospel singer has modified herself to such a great extent for fame and fortune.

Elaine's modified image of a green stop sign made me think of the number of individuals that I see in the city of Saginaw that continually ignore stop lights and stop signs as if they don't even exist threatening the lives of others and themselves. I also thought about how we live in a technological world where everyone is on the go and often don't stop to smell the roses or appreciate life.

I think that a green stop sign definately conveys confusion. Color has very specific meaning in our day to day lives and when one color is exchanged for another with, a different meaning, it can be very disorienting.

    @Danielle

I think you made your point quite well. Many people follow a candidate unquestioningly because it is what their friends or family told them. However, I think you could have made the point a little more clear by putting a shepherd's crook in Obama's hand to show that he was the one leading the sheeple and they would follow him wherever he may lead.

I thought Danialle's idea was very creative. Even though I am not familiar with this actress, Danialle's message makes sense to me as she converts Kitty into a cartoon character. Kitty is not being her real self. I enjoy her humor in leaving the ice cream cone plastic indicating the only thing she didn't change was the thing that wasn't real in the first place.

    Danielle
Danielle's image change conveys that people often follow someone without thinking much. Sheep faces for people faces clearly shows she is comparing them to sheep (sheeples) who follow the crowd and don't really think for themselves. Obama on the stage shows who they are following. Her message was easy to understand and funny at the same time.

  8. @Danialle...I thought about the staff, however, I thought the microphone was an interesting modern representation of it.

  9. @Gina...I especially enjoyed how the beautiful stained glass image at Notre Dame felt serene and peaceful and how you combined your favorite band that, at first glance, seemed to be hugely contrasting. After reading what you wanted to convey, it made perfect sense that your favorite band was your personal sanctuary where you felt at peace.

  10. I think Gina made her point well. It makes perfect sense for individuals to feel their music as a place of personal sanctuary. The stained glass window represents that feeling well.
